Polystyrene is not an industry or government-regulated polymer and it’s available from any country around the world. That means there can be a great deal of varying quality and adherence to building codes with expanded polystyrene. EPS Insulation and EPS cladding are frequently found in older buildings and facilities that are considered high risk for flammability. Recently, more fire retardant EPS materials like foam insulation have been utilised to increase fire resistance and the EPS panel fire rating. Ausure Horizon assesses EPS risk control, and every ‘low’ or ‘high’ risk element of each situation, and discusses the potential appropriate policies with you.

We take pride in our shining track record in managing claims and helping clients with EPS related damages. Dealing with insurance claims during a tough situation can be the last thing on your mind. Why is EPS Expanded Polystyrene Insurance Hard to Find?

Expanded polystyrene panels are considered very flammable and insuring them can be very difficult for both the insurance company and the client. Over the past five years, there have been highly publicised fires at two of Australia’s biggest meat processing plants. The Swickers Bacon Factory in Kingaroy, Queensland was partially destroyed in 2016 due to a EPS related fire. Then, in early 2018, the Thomas Foods International abattoir at Murray Bridge in Adelaide was almost burnt to the ground because of a fire that was ignited by the combustible panels.

Although expanded polystyrene can be a lightweight, and effective insulation material, the EPS sandwich panel fire risk is extremely high due to the fact that they are normally wedged behind drywall, concrete, or sheet metal. This metal sheeting can prevent fire crews from extinguishing a blaze or being able to tell if the fire is still burning.

Ensuring you have the right insurance policy to cover you in the event of any fire or damage is essential when working with EPS. Ausure Horizon is here to help you with all your policy decisions and claims, so you can get back to focusing on the bigger picture.
